Practical gardening
Grow at Home
Everything you need to turn a windowsill, a balcony or a patch of ground into a working garden — soil, water, light and a first harvest inside two months.
Your first eight weeks
- Read your light. Watch the spot for a day. Four hours of direct sun grows greens; six or more grows fruit.
- Build the soil. Equal parts garden soil, compost and coco peat. Skip the chemical fertiliser entirely.
- Start with two easy plants. Palak and tulsi. Both forgive mistakes and both give you something within six weeks.
- Water in the morning. Deep once, rather than shallow twice.
- Feed the soil, not the plant. A handful of compost each month keeps a pot alive for years.
Choose your space
Windowsill — herbs and microgreens in shallow troughs. Balcony — railing planters, tulsi, mint, chillies, marigold. Terrace — deeper containers and small trees; watch the weight load. Ground — raised beds, climbers and native shrubs.
